Many different types of police agencies exist in the United States of America. Each and every police agencies varies from small town police departments to larger federal agencies. The functions of the police agencies usually depend on the type of organization, its size, its mission, and jurisdiction. When selecting an agency that is suitable for you and your interests several things should be considered. In the topic of federal law enforcement agencies, a federal law enforcement agency is an organizational unit with the task of prevention, detection, and investigation of crime and the apprehension of alleged offenders. There are 65 federal agencies and 27 offices of inspector general that employs full-time personnel that are allowed to make arrests and carry firearms (Types of Law Enforcement Agencies, 2015). Examples of federal law enforcement agencies include the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
